One large storeroom houses beds, chairs, fake pianos, and life-size fake animals. Two other smaller ones are filled with everyday objects: fans, fake flowers, fake cigarettes, fake candles, etc. Like Ali Baba’s cave, they are filled with unusual and sometimes bizarre objects.
Most of the large parts of the sets are stored in containers at the Port of Antwerp. Some elements that are too fragile, however, such as the furniture and the fake animals, are kept at La Monnaie in conditions designed to ensure their preservation.
For a few weeks before the beginning of rehearsals for Lulu (2021), the revival of Alban Berg’s opera directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski, the corridors of La Monnaie were populated with spectacular animals, released from their stores, en route to the Prop workshops for a touch-up.
